QUALITY OF TRANSLATION

Quality can be reduced to two words: customer satisfaction. It
may be said that customer satisfaction is principally related to
the purpose of the translation at the side of client. For which
purpose, in other words, client plans to use the translated materials. Even there may be some subjective side of this description, it is possible to hig
hlight some objective quality elements which are thought to generally serve clients satisfaction such as accuracy, fluency, consistency - in style, terminology and formatting, completeness, adherence to deadline.

To achieve objective standards, prime standard is that translation, editing and proofing should be carried out by the competent
translator, editor and proofreader of target language. Editor must
have translating experience particularly in the domain under consideration.

Independent proofing (editing and proofreading) is an other highly significant standard.

Even process is principally divided mainly into 2 phases such as translation and proofing (note that proofing may include revision, review, proofreading, final verification), one other significant standard
is that these phases should be
indivisible.

To help professionals not to miss any necessary objective quality element, appropriate checklists prepared for translator, editor and proofreader should be put into application.

QUALITY OF PROJECT MANAGEMENT

Translation quality also depends on the application of an
efficient and self-proven project
management. QA Procedure is
not limited to re-reading translated texts, but also includes some practices before, during and after the translation.

Firstly, quality assurance consists of determining translator who
is truly able to provide the client with a satisfactory
end-result.

Secondly, quality assurance consists of checking with the
translator and passing on to the client any queries, comments
or reservations.

Once the translation has been completed and checked by
the translator, it is checked in-house by the independent
proofreader. At a basic level, this consists of checking that
everything has been translated and that the client's instructions
(presentation etc.) have been followed.

Corrections are made in consultation with the translator.
These may concern style if this is an important factor. For
urgent work, the re-reading is reduced to enable the translation
to be delivered on time.

The terminology is checked using dictionaries and lexicons
supplied by the client or created by Alafranga over time
and by using reference sources for technological data.

We adopt in principle that
independent corrections of a
translation will serve as a
mechanism to provide increased
quality of the translated text
through objectivity.

Independent corrections may
include:

 1. Checking
 2. Revision
 3. Review
 4. Proofreading
 5. Final verification

Translation and correction
phases are indivisible.
